Why Choose Organic Clothing for your Preemie?

Depending on how early your preemie arrives will often determine just how fragile he or she is. Just being taken away from their little cacoon early is in itself a major stress. They are not ready for the world outside, adding as little stress to their already stressful situation is crucial.

Choosing organic products whenever possible is always a good idea whether preemie or full term. If you think about it, our skin is our largest organ and is capable of absorbing any chemicals that are put on it. The greater the surface area that the skin is exposed to, the greater the rate of absorption.

How thick the skin is will also be a factor in just how much unwanted chemicals are absorbed. The thinner the skin, the more absorbent it will be. In the case of infants and even more so preemies the skin is much thinner and for micro preemies it can be almost translucent.

Most clothing for babies is made of cotton, and cotton is one of the most chemically dependent crops. Cotton sucks up 10% of all agricultural chemicals, and 25% of insecticides on 3% of our arable land. That is more than any other crop per unit. What that boils down to is....it takes about 1/3 of a pound of chemicals to produce enough cotton to make one adult size t-shirt and 3/4 of a pound of chemicals to produce a pair of jeans!!! That can't possibly be good for our planet or our children.

According to the World Health Organization there are approximatly 20,000 deaths a year that can be attributed to pesticide poisoning in developing countries.

So why not choose certified organic whenever possible? Here at AvaBaby's we are constantly watching for new products that are made of certified organic or natural materials. Our organic options are growing steadily and we will continue to increase our lines as quickly as possible. Organic clothing is no longer bland and boring to look at, but there are beautiful colors and prints using organic vegetable dyes showing up on the horizon.

Doing what we can to take care of our earth and ourselves is of deep concern to all. We are striving to do our part here at AvaBaby's for your health and in caring for our planet.
