Preventing Anemia in Premature Babies

Posted by Rebecca on 11/9/2010 to What to Expect
All newborns go through a period of slowing of the formation of red blood cells. This mild anemia usually goes unnoticed in full term babies. In the case of a premature infant, what is usually normal, can cause quite a bit more of a problem. In full term infants as they become anemic, there is an increased production of something called erythropoietin or EPO which speeds up the production of red blood cells . In preemies this response is not quite what it should be yet and the production of red blood cells sloooows waaaaay down.
